Milk Jug Ghost Luminary Craft

Halloween is almost here! Everyone is getting so excited about all of the spooky fun and decorations that go with it. Today I'm sharing a little craft that we made out of empty milk jugs. (We used half gallon jugs, but feel free to use gallon jugs if you like.) Milk jug ghosts have been around for a while, but we changed them up a bit... We removed the bottoms of the jugs so the light can shine through, and add an eerie glow under them.

These little ghosts are spooky cute! They can be placed just about anywhere that you like, indoors or out. The handle makes them easy to hang, or you can simply sit them on a table somewhere. Either way, they are sure to BOO-tify your Halloween display.

Supplies:
  • Milk Jug(s)
  • Black Permanent Marker
  • Craft Knife or Scissors
  • Glue Dots or Hot Glue
  • Battery Operated Tealight(s)

Method:

Remove the label(s) from your milk jug. (WD-40 works wonders.) Wash your jug thoroughly, and allow it to dry.

Using a craft knife or scissors, cut the bottom out of the milk jug in a wavy pattern. (It may be helpful to draw the line on first, but I just freehanded it.) If you are planning to sit the ghost on something, rather than hang it, try to keep the waves somewhat level. (As you can see we had two different color jugs; one white, one more transparent. Both types work. One just has a slightly brighter glow when turned on.)

Draw a face on your ghost using the black marker.

The tealights fit perfectly inside the neck of the milk jugs, just below the rim. Coming up through the bottom, secure a tealight at the neck with either glue dots or a few dabs of hot glue. (We opted for the basic flicker flame tealight, but they also have color changing, etc. Just pick your favorite.)

Replace the cap for a weather resistant decoration. Simply pull the cap off and on to access the power switch for the light. (You may also want to paint the lid white, but the red didn't really bother us.)

Hang your ghost wherever you like, or simply place on a table, mantel, or porch.

Happy Halloween!
